Summary:

One of the major challenges in Earth Sciences is understanding the seismic rupture process, the phenomenon that occurs on a geological fault during an earthquake. It is also a research topic of vital importance in countries like Peru, which are exposed to seismic hazards, as it contributes to risk reduction and to assessing the predictability of earthquakes. In this conference, I will present several advances and current needs in seismic rupture research. Although the topic involves a variety of disciplines (seismology, geology, mechanics, physics, etc.), I will place some emphasis on aspects that can be investigated by developing theoretical models and leveraging mathematical and computational methods.
